A waterfall is a point in a river or stream where water flows over a vertical drop or series of steep drops. It is a geological formation created by water flowing over a rock layer that is harder, and therefore more erosion resistant, than a layer below it. When the upper layer is breached by the water, a sudden difference in elevation occurs.
