Water lily in canal in Malaysia.
The water lily family (Nymphaeaceae) is an aquatic plant whose flowers and leaves float on the water. However, the roots are in the soil and hold the plants in place.
With about'sixty species, this is a small family. The plants can be found all over the world with the exception of the polar regions and deserts. In the Netherlands, yellow splash (Nuphar lutea), white water lily (Nymphaea alba) and northern water lily (Nymphaea candida) occur naturally.
