Transporter is the name for a van from German car manufacturer Volkswagen, known internally as Typ 2 (the Volkswagen Beetle was internally called Typ 1). Since 1990, with the arrival of the T4 variant, Transporter has also been registered as a name. Various nicknames have been used for the various models over the years, with VW Bus being the commonly used one. In German, the car is called Bulli.
Six generations have now been marketed under the name Typ 2, from T1 to T6. So, contrary to popular belief, Typ 2 is not synonymous with a T2 bus.
The Typ 2 is the second model produced by post-war Volkswagen; previously, the company only manufactured the Volkswagen Beetle. Production began in 1950. In the 1960s and 1970s, the Typ 2 became a popular hippie van, mainly because it offered plenty of space for people, goods and food.
