Tips for use

About ‘Vintage Ikat wrapskirt from Sumba’ by Floris Kok

This is a wrapskirt or Hinggis from the Indonesian island of Sumba (Soemba). The very labor-intensive weaving technique used for this is called Ikat. Both the warp and weft are dyed using a tie-dye technique before being stretched and woven into the fabric on the loom. This creates the characteristic detailed but slightly wiped out pattern. This is a traditional design with lizards in red, brown and indigo trimmed with a banded weave.

The original dimensions of this piece are 240 x 85 cm.
