Wormerveer is a town and was until 1974 an independent municipality in the province of North Holland, located on the Zaan. The hamlet Westknollendam was part of the municipality. Since January 1, 1974 is part of the municipality of Zaanstad. The place has a railway station, Station Wormerveer. Wormerveer employs approx. 11,000 inhabitants (2014). The place name is a reference to a spring on the Zaan to the village on the other side Wormer. Although the spring is no longer applicable, the town has not changed over the years.
Wormerveer is famous for its windmills, mainly squeezed oil. There is still oil processing industry present in Wormerveer. Partly because of the oil mills Wormerveer residents have nicknamed Smooth Oren.
