About ‘View during blue hour of Dresden's Altstadt’ by Jeroen de Jongh Photography

Dresden is the capital of the German state of Saxony. Walking here along the northern bank of the River Elbe, which on this particular summer evening during the blue hour was so calm that this reflection was possible, much of the old city can be seen.

Starting with the Augustus Bridge, from where you emerge onto the beautiful Schlossplatz, where you will find the Hofkirche, the Residenzschloss (better known as Dresden Castle), and the Sächsisches Ständehaus, among others. Also nearby are the Brühlsche Terrasse, and the Theaterplatz with the Semperoper and Zwinger.

And to think that all this is (unbelievably but true) at most a kilometre apart in this Baroque city. As if the city planners' mission back then was to create as much beauty as possible on the smallest possible piece of land. Or they didn't like walking that much... :)

Curiously, many of these buildings were destroyed during World War II, and then restored or completely reconstructed to their original state. Some of this work, due to the economic situation of the GDR, took decades and was sometimes interrupted for long periods of time.
