La Serenissima - the most illustrious The 10th century marked the beginning of Venice's rise to become the most important trading metropolis in the Mediterranean. As the "Queen of the Adriatic", the city became a bridge between West and East. Trade in luxury goods, wheat, salt and spices made the Venetians rich and powerful. Magnificent palazzi, huge church buildings and imposing public buildings, citizens with magnificent robes and precious jewellery amazed foreigners. For a long time, Venice's political apparatus also functioned excellently: the Doge, various councils, clerics and officials had precisely regulated powers and functions. Prosperity and distributed powers led to Venice's flourishing - La Serenissima lived up to its name.
