The facade was the business card of the owner/occupant of a house and could serve as a status symbol. The first half of the Golden Age (the period 1600-1650) was a time of economic prosperity. At that time one could therefore afford to go beyond the strict requirements of usefulness and necessity. The prosperous citizen wanted to show how successful he was. The stepped gable, provided with the necessary ornaments, had more allure than the gable, and thus gave more prestige.
