U-9-0: Weimar Sequence by Fajar Rahman

This piece is built on a strict grid, the kind the Bauhaus masters and the Swiss typographers who followed them swore by. Three "characters" sit across the top and middle rows like fragments of a date stamp: a mustard-yellow U, a deep red number 9, and a navy-blue 0. Read them as a year, a room number, a code, whatever you like, the ambiguity is intentional.

Underneath, the same three colors return as pure geometry instead of letterforms: two quarter-circle fans in ochre anchoring the left and right edges, a solid vermillion disc sitting low and grounded, and a tight stack of horizontal lines in the bottom-left corner that reads almost like a barcode or a ventilation grille. A single diagonal line cuts through the upper section, the kind of line you'd find ruled across a Swiss grid layout to mark a fold, a hierarchy, or simply a deliberate break in the symmetry. It's a small detail, but it's the one thing in the composition that refuses to sit on the grid.

I built this as a study in restraint. The Bauhaus workshops in Weimar treated the circle, the square, and primary colour as a kind of alphabet, basic forms that could carry as much meaning as any letter. I wanted to push that idea literally, by mixing real characters (U, 9, 0) with their geometric counterparts (the fan shapes, the disc, the line grid), so the eye has to do a little work deciding which is which.

The mood is dry, confident, slightly architectural, nothing soft or decorative about it. It suits a room where you want a graphic anchor rather than a mood piece: a study, a hallway, a workspace, anywhere clean lines and a warm-but-controlled palette (mustard, navy, brick red, off-white) would hold their own against furniture and shelving rather than disappearing into it. Anyone drawn to typography, vintage exhibition posters, or early 20th-century design history will likely recognize the lineage immediately, even without knowing the names behind it.
