About ‘Two-master on the North Sea’ by Miranda van Hulst

On the North Sea, a two-master lies quietly on the water. The horizon is clear and sharp, a straight line where sea and sky meet. Above the boat, two layers of clouds draw in; the lower are beautiful, soft grey and subtly lit by the sun, while the upper layer looks darker and stormy, heavy and threatening, as if the sky could break open at any moment.

The boat itself sails firmly in the water, its wooden deck weathered by salt and wind. The colours are raw and sober: deep blues in the water, muted greys and soft orange accents in the sky, which together create a subdued but powerful atmosphere.

The image captures a moment of contrast: the calm sea and firm horizon versus the moving, threatening upper sky. There is a sense of focus and calm, of life at sea that must always remain alert to changing circumstances. The boat moves slowly, almost imperceptibly, but clearly on course in the vast expanse of water.
