Tulips in Delft Blue, Flowers in Full Bloom

by Wilma Mesman

Lush and broadly opened, these tulips fill the entire frame. The flowers in front are creamy in tone with a blue base, their petals curling smoothly outward. Below them stand blooms with marbled drawings in deep blue, painted in the manner of Delft pottery, in which you keep discovering new shapes. The stems are sturdy and green and carry the heads high, so that you look up between the flowers towards the sky. That sky is clear in tone and lets every bloom stand out. Lower down the picture grows fuller and becomes a dense carpet of petals and buds. A botanical subject and modern art come together here in a generous floral work with plenty of atmosphere. This painting suits the living room, the bedroom, the kitchen, a hallway or an office. Combine several works from the Modern Delfts Blauw album into an atmospheric diptych or four-piece display. Wonderful as an ArtFrame™ — and on canvas and every other material too.
