Often the roots in old trees are so large that they even grow partly above the ground. Trees provide clean air, shelter, cooling and also offer peace and space for contemplation. They have captured the imagination for centuries, appear in ancient stories and have symbolic meanings. Trees defy the seasons and the years. They are the lungs of the earth, deeply rooted in the soil and reaching for the sky. The roots of trees have an important function for a tree's growth and health. They absorb nutrients from the soil that are essential for growth. And, of course, they provide the tree with water.
The power of roots has not gone unnoticed. The symbolism of roots has gained a prominent place in the Dutch language. What about being deeply rooted (being completely entwined in something), being well-rooted (standing firmly on the ground, having a good foundation) or rooting (having to wait a long time for something)?
