With a bunch of flowers that seem to grow out of her womb, this lusty young woman lasciviously personifies spring, the birth season and the restoration of nature. Together with three paintings representing the other seasons, the painting once adorned the ceiling of the Palazzo Barbo in Venice. When the writer Carlo Ridolfi saw the paintings in 1648, he described them as a 'capriccio of dreams' - a musical ensemble filled with 'things that come to mind as people dream'.

Tintoretto (Venice, 29 September 1518 - there, 31 May 1594), was a Venetian painter. His real name was Jacopo Robusti, his nickname means 'the textile dyer'. He owed this name to his father who was a textile dyer ('tintore') by profession.
