About the artwork

The three witches are characters in William Shakespeare's play Macbeth (c. 1603-1607). They bear a striking resemblance to the three fates of classical mythology and are perhaps intended as a distorted version of the incarnations of fate dressed in white. The witches eventually lead Macbeth to his downfall.
The witches of Shakespeare are prophets who greet Macbeth, the general, early in the play and predict his ascent to kingship. After killing the king and gaining the throne of Scotland, Macbeth hears them ambiguously predicting his eventual demise. The witches and their 'dirty' attributes and supernatural activities set an ominous tone for the piece.

Thomas Moran (Bolton, 12 February 1837 - Santa Barbara, 25 August 1926) was an English-American painter and etcher.
The artist was an exponent of the romantic Hudson River School and of the Rocky Mountain School of landscape painters. Moran's style can also be seen as an example of American luminism, in which extensive experiments with light and atmospheric effects are carried out.
