Slumped down, with his trousers open, the man blows the smoke from his pipe along his nostrils. His gaze is blurred, like he's half stunned. In the 17th century there were fervent supporters and opponents of smoking. Some scholars believed that tobacco smoke was beneficial to body and mind; others were convinced that pipe smoking was as pernicious as excessive drinking.
