About ‘The geometry of history’ by Nordlicht Atelier

This photograph is a pure homage to Venice's architectural mastery. The focus is on the harmonious composition of a narrow alleyway, where historic façades, striking window arches and the play of perspective come together. The reduction to black and white clearly highlights the architectural details – from the relief of the stonework to the fine lines of the cornices. It is a study of form and space that documents the tranquillity and permanence of the city away from the hustle and bustle. The atmosphere of the image is clear, structured and characterised by an elegant restraint. The work conveys the message that true beauty lies in the symmetry and craftsmanship of past eras. Technically, a high depth of field was used here to sharply depict the entire length of the alley, while the grey scale conversion makes the different material properties of the old masonry tangible.
