The feast of Cleopatra, Gerard de Lairesse
Cleopatra bet Antony who could give the most expensive banquet. She won: she dissolved an invaluable pearl in vinegar and drank this mixture. De Lairesse painted the story as a scene from a play, with antique costumes and against an appropriate backdrop of classical architecture and furniture. With this classicist style he renewed Dutch painting.
