About ‘The enigmatic Petra Monastery in Jordan’ by Frank Photos

The Monastery of Petra, or Al-Deir, is one of the most impressive wonders of the ancient Nabataean city. Located in the Jordanian desert, it is carved into the pink sandstone cliffs that are typical of Petra. Accessible after climbing 800 steps, this majestic monument reveals an elaborate façade 47 metres wide and 48 metres high, symbolising the grandeur of Nabataean architecture. Built in the 1st century BC, it was probably used as a funerary temple, although it remains shrouded in mystery. The monastery is a fascinating testimony to the technical and artistic mastery of the Nabataeans, who shaped their empire in this arid environment. In addition to its historical significance, the Petra Monastery offers spectacular views over the surrounding valley, making it a must-see for travellers in search of adventure and timeless beauty. During your visit, the majestic silence of the site adds to the mystical atmosphere surrounding this ancient sanctuary.
