During severe storms, combined with extremely high water, the dike watch may be deployed. Fortunately, this rarely happens. The sculpture on the dike in the Ballumerbocht shows how this used to happen. The sculpture was placed on the occasion of raising the last section of dike on Ameland to the level of the Delta and as such is the symbol of safe Ameland. The plaque next to the statue bears the following text: "Even though the storm sometimes drives the waves fearfully high, the dike watchman is ready with a watchful eye. Waterschap De Amelander Grieën".
