Sossusvlei is a clay valley in the middle of the Namib Desert. The valley is part of the Namib-Naukluft National Park in Namibia. Fed by the Tsauchab River, the area is known for the high, red sand dunes that surround it and make it a large sea of sand. Vegetation, such as the acacia, is supplied with water by rare floods of the Tsauchab, in which the soil slowly fills up. The red colour of the sand is due to the high concentration of iron.
Near the Sossusvlei lie the Dodevlei and the Hidden Vlei. Dune 45 is a well-known viewpoint. These special places can be reached by road via the village of Sesriem.
