The Vatican or Vatican City with the official name Vatican City is a walled enclave state within the city of Rome in Italy. With an area of about 44 hectares and a population of 842, Vatican City is the smallest internationally recognised independent state in the world in terms of area and population. This country takes the form of an ecclesiastical or priestly monarchy ruled by the Bishop of Rome, namely the Pope. The top officials of this country are all Catholic clerics who come from different countries. Since the pope's return from Avignon in 1377, they have generally lived in the Apostolic Palace in what is now Vatican City, although they also occasionally reside in the Quirinal Palace in Rome or elsewhere.
