Tips for use

Point your camera at the floor or a piece of furniture first, then move it slowly up towards the wall. A bare white wall is hard for your phone to recognise.

About ‘The Tram: serene speed’ by Filip D´hooghe

The city transforms into a flowing stream of lines, light and colour. A tram racing past cuts across the frame like a broad, blurred strip, whilst the cars and buildings, too, seem to lose their sharp contours. Only a few shapes remain just about recognisable, as if reality were being stretched for a moment.

The horizontal movement gives the photograph a strong sense of speed, yet at the same time there is something curiously calm about it. The architecture in the background becomes almost an abstract pattern of glass, steel and reflections. The dark cars interrupt this movement with their compact shapes, whilst the soft street lighting creates an almost cinematic atmosphere.

Through the deliberate use of motion blur, what is captured here is not so much a place as a moment in motion. The photograph thus strikes a fine balance between documentary street photography and abstraction. What is passing by lingers for just a moment.
