The Sense of Taste, Philippe Mercier (1747)
Like in The Sense of Touch, this scene depicts two pairs of lovers sitting in an open loggia, accompanied by a young black page. The couple on the right is more cheerful, confidently managing the wine bottles and filling the glasses. In contrast, the couple on the left seems more reserved, despite the fact that the young woman's glass is being filled with a bit of noise. A third couple has disappeared from the scene, leaving behind six ices and a used napkin at the head of the table. In the foreground, a silver dish filled with peaches and figs adds an enticing touch.
