The Heart of the Kunuku

by Renata Rolefes Art

The Heart of the Kunuku brings a slice of authentic Curaçao to life. Tucked away amongst tall cacti and surrounded by greenery stands a traditional kunuku house, simple and timeless. Here, time seems to pass more slowly. The tranquillity of the countryside, the warm sun and nature combine to form the backdrop to a way of life centred on simplicity and a sense of community.

The kunuku is the rural heart of Curaçao. For generations, families have lived in these characteristic houses, where they lived off the land and were close to nature. The imposing cacti, so characteristic of the island, give the landscape its unique character and serve as a reminder of the strength and resilience of the Caribbean climate.

The painting is built up from multiple layers of acrylic paint, applied with palette knives, expressive brushstrokes and playful splashes of paint. The rich texture brings the weathered walls, the old roof and the robust cacti to life. The fresh blue sky and the warm earth tones combine to create a harmonious colour palette that perfectly reflects the tranquillity of the kunuku.

‘The Heart of the Kunuku’ is more than just a painting of a house. It is a tribute to authentic Curaçao, where tradition, nature and simplicity still go hand in hand. A colourful work of art that brings warmth, tranquillity and the soul of the Caribbean island into any room.
