About ‘The Gateway to America’ by Kirsten Kortleven

On the quay of Rotterdam's Wilhelmina Pier, the past and the present come together in a unique way. In this work, I captured the iconic facade of Hotel New York, the former headquarters of the Holland America Line, while the modern World Port Center tower rises like a mighty shadow behind it. It is an image full of layers: from the distinctive clock towers to the modern water taxis waiting at the bottom of the quay for their next passenger.

As a street photographer, I get inspired time and again by the transformation of Rotterdam. This image was created during a ramble along the river Maas, where the sunlight precisely accentuated the textures of both the old brickwork and the modern steel. By omitting colour and opting for a monochrome finish with warm undertones, I created an atmosphere of tranquillity and timelessness.

For me, this work symbolises resilience; how a city grows without losing its roots. In an interior, this image makes a powerful statement. It brings the dynamics of the metropolis into the home, but at the same time offers a point of rest through its warm, nostalgic atmosphere. It is an ode to the city that is never finished, captured in one still moment.

At Art Heroes we do not mass produce or keep stock, but make to order. Your artwork is made with passion by experienced craftsmen and is on average ready for shipment in 7 business days. Details on the exact delivery date will be sent after placement of the order. Depending on the shipping country the following delivery times apply:

Is your order a gift for someone? We can create you a gift voucher that displays the artwork(s) you ordered, so you have something to give while the artwork is being printed. Just send us an e-mail and we’ll take care of it.

How will the package be sent?

We work with several carriers, mainly UPS and DHL (Depending on the country where it is delivered, this may vary). Couriers can also be used for large or fragile packages.

Canvas are securely packed in plastic bubble wrap and cardboard. Wallpaper and posters are sent in sturdy tubes.

A courier collects the package from us and takes the package to a depot where it usually stays overnight. The day after it is collected and delivered to your home or office. We work with courier services that specialise in handling fragile parcels.

Not at home? Then the delivery driver will leave a note and an appointment can be made to schedule a new delivery.

Unfortunately, there remains a chance that something can happen during a shipment. In the unlikely event that your parcel has been damaged during transit, please take a picture of the entire item, the damage, the entire package and a picture of the shipping label. Send these photos to us by email and we will solve the problem without delay.
