With more sheep than people, it is not for nothing that Texel is known as the island of the sheep. Wherever you look, you will see the iconic Texel sheep grazing peacefully in the wide, green fields - often surrounded by characteristic schapenboeten, the sloping barns so typical of the island.

The Texel sheep is famous for its thick coat and flavourful lamb. In local restaurants, you can taste the pure craft in dishes featuring Texel lamb, a regional product that is praised far beyond the country's borders. Want to discover more? Then visit one of the island's sheep farms, where you can cuddle lambs and get an insight into the farmer's life.

Especially in spring, Texel is at its most beautiful: the meadows fill with frolicking lambs and the smell of blossoming flowers. Cycle or walk along specially marked sheep routes and experience the rural charm up close.
