Anthony of Egypt, Anthony Abbot, Anthony Hermit, or Anthony the Great (Heracleopolis Magna, Egypt, 251 - Colzimberg, 356) was a Christian saint known as the father of monasticism. His name day is January 17. He was the first monk to gain many followers and is therefore known as the father of monastic life. To Antony is attributed the first formulation of the metaphor of the book of nature.
The story of the Temptations of St. Anthony is well known. It is said that demons appeared to Anthony who tried to keep him from the good path. This story has been a rich source of inspiration for many painters.
