A hoverfly sits on a flower to look for nectar. Nectar is the food of insects. It is a sugar-rich liquid secreted by the plant through honey glands, for insects to collect and take some pollen with them at the same time. Both benefit. The insect then has nutrition and energy and the plant has a better chance of reproducing. This is how nature keeps itself in balance. If for some reason the insects disappear, eventually the plants that depend on them also disappear. That goes for everything, including our intended harvests. So this is really very important, but the importance of insects to nature and all of us is still too little recognised.
