SugarCity is a site with an event location and offices in Halfweg in the municipality of Haarlemmermeer on the former site of the CSM sugar factory.
In 1863, the first sugar factory was opened in Halfweg. After a few years, this sugar factory closed its doors and not much later N.V. Suikerfabriek Holland established itself there. The factory was located on the site of the former Swanenburg Town Hall, opposite the old Halfweg station, close to the old lock complex that formed the connection between the Rijnland basin water and the IJ.
During its existence, the Suikerfabriek was an important employer for Halfweg and the surrounding area. During the beet campaign in the autumn, there was a great deal of activity in and around the factory, with ships and vehicles bringing in the beet from the surrounding polders.
From the mid-seventies of the 20th century the company grew into a large concern. The sugar activities gradually became a smaller and smaller part of the total company. As a result, and by increasing the scale of the individual sugar factories, the number of sugar factories was reduced. The factory in Halfweg also came to an end in 1992.
The former factory is now used as an event location under the name SugarCity Event. The factory and the sugar silos are also used for offices.
