Between Westenschouwen (Kop van Schouwen) and Burgh-Haamstede, the characteristic pile heads are also located on the beach, which are also referred to as beach poles, storm breakers or breakwaters.
The function of these piles is to prevent erosion of the coast. The tidal currents become less strong as a result of the piles, which means that less sand is carried along into the sea.
The Kop van Schouwen is a Natura 2000 area and has been a protected natural monument since 1978 and a state natural monument since 1988.
