The building was repeatedly expanded in the thirteenth to sixteenth centuries, including an impressive ambulatory. In 1475 Pope Pius IV gave permission for the foundation of an own chapter in the St Stevenskerk. In 1591 the church became definitively Protestant, apart from a Catholic intermezzo around 1670. The church was severely damaged in the bombardment of 1944, but was rebuilt until 1969. In 2001, the church received two stained glass windows by Marc Mulders, entitled Pelican and Stigmata.
