Rome is home to very large numbers of Starlings every year, who come to roost in the city. They do this for two reasons. The first is the safety of the large group and the second is the warmth of the city.Before it gets dark, these Starlings form large swarms. Here you can see such a swarm above the Colosseum, among others. The beautiful shapes are caused by dodging birds of prey.
