About "Spårö daybeacon"

About the artwork

Spårö lighthouse is located on the island of Spårö in the Tjust archipelago. The lighthouse was designed by Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz. Inspired by a lighthouse Carl had seen in the Naples area, he designed a building with a square plan under a curved peaked roof and from that the lighthouse on Spårö was created.

Spårö lighthouse was built in 1776-1777 and has been considered by many, including Evert Taube, to be one of the most beautiful seamarks on the east coast. The lighthouse is 25 metres high and has 2 metres thick walls at the bottom. It stands on the top of the 34-metre-high Spåröberget.

The lighthouse was built to facilitate sailing to Västervik. Iron baskets with burning tar were placed out through hatches in the eastern side of the roof at night and in unsuitable weather. In this way, Spårö lighthouse was used until 1884. In 1925, lightning struck the lighthouse and ignited the chipboard roof, which was then replaced with a tin roof. Today, Spårö is a popular excursion destination and the archipelago's most famous landmark.
