The New Haarlem Lock at the Singel, known as 'Souvenir d'Amsterdam', Matthijs Maris, 1871 oil on canvas, h 46.5cm × w 35cm. According to his own account, Matthijs Maris painted this painting in one week to make a quick buck. Maris, who lived in Paris, took a stereo photograph of Amsterdam as his starting point. He adjusted the image of the photo and painted tall Parisian houses in the background. The result is a dreamy 19th-century cityscape, which reveals more and more details on longer viewing.
