The Dunne Bierkade was a creative hotbed, where no fewer than three Jewish brothers were trained as artists, Salomon, Elchanon and Maurits Verveer. Salomon Verveer (1813-1876) grew into one of the most famous painters of the Romantic era. He painted cityscapes, combining fantasised historicising ensembles and reality-based buildings. Salomon also enjoyed great fame for his beach and dune views and his paintings of Jewish neighbourhoods. His work sold well and was highly appreciated both nationally and internationally. The work was awarded numerous medals and royal honours.

Salomon's work became very popular in Belgium, England and France. The Belgian minister Sylvain Van de Weyer bought two of his paintings at the Brussels Salon in 1845. In 1855, the French emperor Napoleon III bought one of his works at the Paris World's Fair. Verveer was awarded the Order of Leopold in 1851, the Order of the Dutch Lion in 1863 and the Order of the Crown of Oak in 1874. He was well known to the Dutch royal family.

Verveer was president of the Hague Pulchri Studio and became a teacher of Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch and Frederik Hendrik Kaemmerer, among others. He died in 1876 at the age of 62 and was buried in the Jewish cemetery in The Hague. His work is in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the Gemeentemuseum The Hague, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, the Rijksmuseum Twenthe and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, among others. In 2015, a retrospective exhibition of the work of the three Verveer brothers took place at the Jewish Historical Museum.
