About ‘Soft white fields of Bhuj’ by Frank Photos

In the arid region of Gujarat, near Bhuj, vast cotton fields stretch as far as the eye can see, punctuating the landscape with bright white accents. Cultivated for centuries, this precious fibre is an essential resource for the local communities, who perpetuate an ancestral know-how. During the flowering season, the plants are adorned with delicate flowers before giving way to fluffy bolls, ready for harvesting. Under the scorching sun, the farmers, often dressed in traditional outfits, work carefully to pick the cotton by hand. This crop is not only an economic engine, but also an integral part of the identity of Gujarat, where textile crafts are renowned throughout India. After harvesting, the cotton is sorted, spun and sometimes dyed using methods handed down from generation to generation. These simple yet magnificent agricultural landscapes bear witness to the deep bond between nature and the people of Bhuj.
