Sibylla Erythrea, Maarten van Heemskerck, 1564
The sibylle Erythrea was an ancient fortune-teller who would have predicted the coming of Christ. Heemskerck depicted her on this left panel of a large altarpiece as a young woman in fancy dress. The layer of paint has become discoloured and transparent here and there, so that the underdrawing can be seen in the garment.
