About ‘Shrimp fisherman on horseback in Oostduinkerke’ by Rik Verslype

An old Oostduinkerk tradition , shrimp fisherman on horseback . Is still practiced as folklore .

This method of fishing with draught animals used to be common along the entire Flemish North Sea coast, but at present is only practiced in Koksijde and Oostduinkerke . The Oostduinkerke beach is very suitable for it; there are no breakwaters or other obstacles. The tradition of horse fishing goes back five hundred years. In 2009, the shrimp fishing on horseback was included in representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of mankind .
