Self-portrait, Ferdinand Bol, 1653
This is the only known self-portrait in which Ferdinand Bol expressly presented himself as a painter. Garbed in ‘antique’ costume and a beret, and holding his palette and brushes, he exudes an air of self-confidence. Even though Bol had been working as an independent master for more than ten years by this time, clear echoes of his teacher, Rembrandt, can be discerned in the lighting and fluently painted yellow gold of his clothing.
