The sea turtle with its own island on its back. Looking into the camera. A beautiful surrealistic work in high quality. A real eye-catcher for the wall and not available anywhere else.
Sea turtles (Cheloniidae) are a family of large turtles found in all tropical and in some subtropical and temperate seas. Seven species occur worldwide, of which at least five are endangered. Of them, the spurious hawksbill sea turtle has the northernmost laying grounds, as far north as the Mediterranean Sea. Occasional dead specimens of several species have washed ashore in the Netherlands. The actual family of sea turtles is the Cheloniidae, and is also the best known because it contains the most species. Another family of marine turtles is the leatherback turtle family (Dermochelyidae), which is still represented by only one species; the leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). Strictly speaking, it does not belong to the sea turtle family, although it is usually named as such. Together, the two families form the superfamily Chelonioidea.
