The photo was taken in the early morning after a very cold night; hence the beautiful patches of fog above the water which gives a special atmosphere to the image. The Schildmeer is a lake located in the Duurswold region in the Dutch province of Groningen between Schildwolde and Overschild. The Schildmeer is a natural lake and a remnant of the Woldjermeer lake. This in turn was part of a lake and lake area that was largely filled in over the years. Through the lake flows the Drainage Canal of Duurswold. The Schilmeer has a connection with the Eemskanaal via a lock, so that the Dollard, the Wad and the Marengebied can be reached by water.In the original lake area was a road that was so boggy at a certain place that a stone dam was built. At that place, Steendam was formed.
