In 1894, during his third and last trip to Paris, Rusiñol painted two very similar canvases of which the protagonist was a very skinny and sick girl. In La morfinòmana, the model lies on the bed under the effects of the morphine she ingested.
The morphine addict in the painting is Stephanie Nantas, the painter's favorite model during the months he stayed in the apartment in Quai Bourbon. The addict appears in almost ten works that Rusiñol produced anonymously during that period.
Santiago Rusiňol i Prats (Barcelona, 25 February 1861 - Aranjuez, 13 June 1931) was a Catalan painter, dramaturge, writer and journalist. He mainly painted street scenes, interiors of cafes, rooms and courtyards.
