About "Salt of the Afar | Camels in Ethiopia"

About the artwork

This black-and-white photograph shows an encounter between two camels and their camel driver as they trek through the vast salt flats of the Danakil Depression in Ethiopia. The camels are guided by the thoughtful pace of their handler across the sweltering plains. This is one of the hottest places on earth.

The minimalist nature of the photograph emphasises the vastness and serenity of the landscape. The salt flats stretch to the horizon, where the sky seems to merge with the salt, and in the still water surface, the camels are beautifully reflected.

The camels are on their way to Lake Assale, where they go to fetch salt. They will then take that salt to Berhale, a village in the mountains, from where it will be traded.

The picture exudes a quiet beauty that is timeless. The simple scene invites the viewer to meditate on the ancient rituals of nomadic life in the desert and the soothing harmony of man and nature.
