About the artwork

Royal Air Force Sud Aviation Alouette III.

Registration: A-465.
Colour scheme: colours of the demonstration team The Grasshoppers.

Soon after the Alouette II entered production, Sud Aviation started thinking about a larger aircraft for seven people. The Alouette III got a sturdier, wider fuselage and also a completely closed rear section instead of the steel tube framework of the Alouette II. The first Alouette III flew in early 1959 and production started, most of which was destined for export. By far the majority of Alouette III's are used for military purposes, but sometimes also for rescue and ambulance flights.

In the early '60s, the Ministry of Defence decided to purchase 77 Alouette III helicopters, replacing the Hiller OH-23 Raven and Sud Aviation Alouette II helicopters and part of the Piper Super Cubs. With the exception of the five SAR Alouette III's, the helicopters were assigned to the Light Aircraft Group (GPLV). They were owned by the Royal Army, but the Royal Air Force (KLu) provided the infrastructure and flying and technical personnel.

This photo was taken on 30 August 2024 during the nightshoot of the Summer Offensive at the National Military Museum in Soesterberg.
