The Patriarchal Cathedral Basilica of St. Mark is the cathedral and largest church in Venice. It is located in St. Mark's Square, next to the Doge's Palace.
The present basilica is the third church on this site. It dates from around 1060. The basilica was built to provide a final resting place for the remains of Saint Mark, looted by Venice from Alexandria in 828.
