Marrakech, or Marrakesh, in Morocco is an onslaught to the senses of sound, noise and smells.
A popular place to stay when you visit are called 'riads', little tranquil havens like a small hotel complex with individual rooms with bathrooms. They are traditional Moroccan buildings, with Moorish architecture and an internal garden or courtyard and often a swimming pool and fountain. Many are restored mansions that used to belong to the wealthy.
It is wonderful to start the day in the luxury of a riad and prepare yourself for the tourist activities you have planned. Step out of the door onto the street and you are immediately into the hustle and bustle of life in Marrakesh. After a day sightseeing it is lovely to return to the peace of the riad and to relax with a drink.
