The Ponte Vecchio (Italian: old bridge), is a famous medieval bridge over the Arno River in Florence, Italy. The bridge is best known for the shops (especially jewellers) located on the bridge. One level above the bridge is the Corridoio Vasariano. This corridor of about one kilometre was commissioned by Cosimo I de' Medici and built by Giorgio Vasari, and its purpose was so that members of the de' Medici family could go to and from their palaces Palazzo Vecchio and Palazzo Pitti without going among the people.
