About the artwork

Analog mathematical art: Physics of the force-free spinning top, visualized using the traditional techniques of descriptive geometry.

Viewed from an observer in the gyroscope's frame of reference, the vector of angular momentum traces out the intersection curve of a sphere and an ellipsoid: The former determined by the magnitude of angular momentum, the latter by rotational energy.

A tribute to Louis Poinsot's geometric theory of the gyroscope.

Part of a series of drawings featuring differently shaped ellipsoids and different viewpoints.

Number 3 shows a slighlty prolate ellipsoid, and the intersection curve is very different from a circle. The spinning top not only rotates, but also wobbles!

Graphite pencil construction, watercolor pencils on 21cmx12cm watercolor paper.
