Galan volcanic plateau.
The volcanic caldera forms a crater 42 kilometres from north to south and 24 kilometres from east to west in the Andes.
The Puna de Atacama is located among the mountains west of Salta and extends to the border with Bolivia and Chile. Its altitude is about 3,500 metres and it has a desert climate with little precipitation. The name probably comes from Quechua, an Indian dialect and means "cold. remote place". The presence of volcanoes has brought minerals from the earth to the surface, colouring the landscape.
