The lead tenders are neatly moored in IJmuiden, close to the Pilotage station. Their sleek silhouettes light up in the warm glow of the evening sun, which turns the steel skins a soft orange. Industry rises in the background, with tall chimneys and activity that never seems to stop. In front of the quay stretches the port of IJmuiden: the gateway to the port of Amsterdam. Here wait the pilots who, day and night, guide the large ocean-going vessels safely into the narrow entrance. A place where peace and bustle meet, in the golden light of the setting sun.

Port photography is a fascinating form of photography that focuses on capturing the activity in ports. Port towns are often bustling centres of trade and industry, with ships, trucks and trains moving in and out to load and unload goods. This offers photographers the opportunity to capture beautiful images of large ships docked at the quayside, crane machines loading and unloading containers from and onto the ships, and workers busy at work.
